Early Life: From the Slums to the Spotlight
Born on February 9, 1976, in the bustling yet underprivileged locality of Bandra East, Mumbai, Sanjay Bharatiya—originally Sanjay Sukhdev Kharat—was raised in a financially struggling Dalit family. His father, Sukhdev Kharat, worked as a government mechanic, while his mother, Vedubai, managed the home. Growing up amidst the socio-economic struggles of a slum, Sanjay was exposed early to the harsh realities of poverty, caste discrimination, and marginalization.
Yet, within those challenges, a spark ignited. Inspired by the power of language, Sanjay found solace in literature. His pen became his escape—and eventually, his weapon of change.
A Literary Trailblazer: From Greeting Cards to Groundbreaking Poetry
Sanjay’s professional writing journey began in the advertising world. Working as a Marathi copywriter for iconic brands like Marks, Archies, and Hallmark, he wrote more than 10,000 greeting cards, touching countless hearts with his emotional expressions.
His poetic voice resonated far beyond commercial platforms. In 1999, his first poetry collection, Bedhund, was published—marking his formal entry into Marathi literature. Sanjay soon became a regular contributor to leading publications such as Loksatta and Lokmat, where his poems and articles explored themes of love, loss, identity, and resistance.
The Digital Awakening: Shabdmanthan – A Voice for the People
As the world turned digital, Sanjay adapted his pen to new platforms. In 2020, he launched his YouTube channel, Shabdmanthan, and its accompanying blog to bring poetry closer to the people. Through this space, he recites his poetry, shares personal reflections, and publishes powerful film reviews and social commentary.
His musical journey also blossomed with the release of his first music album, Prem Jhale Tula, under the prestigious Times Music label. Featuring lyrics penned by Sanjay himself, the song touched listeners with its romantic, heartfelt expressions—proving once again his versatility across genres.
