Raj Thackeray’s “Slap” Threat Fuels Marathi Language Controversy in Maharashtra

Tensions continue to rise in Maharashtra over the use of the Marathi language. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray recently issued a controversial statement, threatening physical violence against those who don’t understand Marathi.

Thackeray’s Remarks Spark Outrage

Addressing a rally in Mumbai’s Mira-Bhayandar, Thackeray stated, “Now if you can’t understand Marathi even when it’s spoken directly into your ear, you’ll get a slap below it. People create a fuss for no reason.” This inflammatory remark follows an incident where MNS party workers assaulted a shop owner in the same area for allegedly not speaking Marathi.

Escalating Language Tensions in Maharashtra

This incident is the latest in a series of events highlighting the ongoing language debate in Maharashtra. While promoting the use of Marathi is a valid cause, Thackeray’s aggressive approach has sparked widespread criticism and concern. Many see his statement as inciting violence and further dividing the community.
