Rahul Gandhi Detained: Opposition MPs Allege Election Fraud, Fight to “Save Constitution”
Tensions flared in the national capital as prominent opposition leaders, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav, were detained by police during a protest march. The march, dubbed “vote-chori” (vote theft), originated from Parliament’s Makar Dwar and aimed to reach the Election Commission’s headquarters.
Dispute Over Protest Permissions
Delhi Police assert that the march lacked the necessary permissions. However, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh countered this claim, stating he had informed the Election Commission of India (ECI) about the planned protest in a letter. This discrepancy adds another layer of complexity to the already tense situation.
BJP Accuses Congress of Spreading Anarchy
Responding to the opposition’s allegations of election manipulation, BJP leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accused the Congress party of fabricating claims. “Congress lies about EVMs, raises the issue of Maharashtra elections and Haryana elections and creates a mountain of lies,” Pradhan stated, characterizing the protest as a “well-thought-out strategy to create a state of anarchy.”
Gandhi’s Plea to “Save the Constitution”
During the protest, Rahul Gandhi emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values and safeguarding the Constitution. His call to “save the Constitution” underscores the opposition’s concerns about the alleged electoral irregularities.
