Mehbooba Mufti Voices Concern Over Urdu’s Status in J&K

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has expressed deep concern over what she perceives as the ongoing communalization of the Urdu language within the region. She highlighted the continued prevalence of Urdu in official documents and government paperwork as a key indicator of this issue.

Following a recent order by the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), Mufti further suggested that the judiciary is being influenced by political forces. She argues that this alleged influence is connected to the broader issue of Urdu’s status in Jammu and Kashmir.

Urdu Remains Prevalent in Official Records

Mufti emphasized that a significant portion of revenue records and government paperwork in Jammu and Kashmir are still maintained in Urdu. This, she believes, underscores the language’s enduring importance in the region’s administrative functioning.
